Emerson, New Jersey is a borough located in Bergen County, in the northern part of the state. The borough is situated on the Hackensack River about 20 miles northwest of Manhattan and covers an area of about 2.9 square miles. Emerson is bordered by Oradell to the north, River Edge to the east, Westwood to the south and Hillsdale to the west.

The terrain in Emerson is mostly flat with some hills and valleys throughout. The highest point in Emerson is located at an elevation of about 350 feet above sea level while the lowest point is at an elevation of approximately 15 feet above sea level. The land that is now Emerson was originally part of the Hackensack Indian Tribe’s territory and was later purchased by Dutch settlers in 1668. In 1894, the borough was officially incorporated as “Emerson” and named after an early settler, Colonel William Emerson.

The town has been represented in the New Jersey State Assembly since 2004 by Gordon Johnson and in the US House of Representatives since 2009 by Josh Gottheimer. In addition, the mayor of Emerson is Democrat Lou Lamatina who was elected in 2018 and is currently serving his second term.

The borough council of Emerson is composed of seven members, six of whom are elected from wards and one who serves as an at-large representative. Each council member serves a four-year term with elections taking place every two years. The current council is composed of Democrats with one Republican member representing the at-large seat.
